Personal Trainer for the City of London
The Strength Coach is Matt Alexander’s 1-2-1 strength coaching for people who work in the City of London. Sessions run at UNTIL, 280 Bishops Square, in Spitalfields just outside the City’s eastern boundary, and most of the eastern City is within a 20-minute walk.
Before he went independent, Matt Alexander was PT Manager at Equinox Bishopsgate, so he has seen from the inside how the big City clubs work and who they suit. If you are weighing a City gym against a coach, his ranking of the best gyms in the City of London sets out who should join one and who should find a coach first. Every programme with The Strength Coach starts with the In-Person Longevity Assessment, and sessions run at the Liverpool Street training base.

Getting here from the City
From the eastern half of the City, walking is usually as quick as the tube. From the western half, take the Central or Metropolitan line to Liverpool Street and walk on.
The City sits inside the Congestion Charge zone, so from a City office walking or the tube beats driving.

Ways to train with Matt from a City office
Three ways to train with Matt from a City office, each starting from a measured assessment.
-
In-Person Longevity Assessment
£299, at Bishops Square. It sets the programme every 1-2-1 pack follows, and it is credited against a 12 or 24-session pack.
-
1-2-1 Coaching
60-minute sessions with Matt, sized to fit before the working day or inside a long lunch. Packs of 6, 12 or 24.
-
Online Coaching
For weeks away from the City: a programme written for the gym you can actually reach, including a corporate gym with limited barbell access.
Personal training around the City’s office week
- The City runs on weekdays. On a typical Tuesday to Thursday, Bank and Monument station counts about 89,500 entries, against about 53,700 on a Friday and 28,500 on a Saturday (TfL, 2025). The Strength Coach coaches Monday to Friday, 06:00 to 16:00.
- The City of London has about 676,000 jobs and about 8,600 residents (ONS, 2024 and 2021), roughly 79 jobs for every person who lives there. A City programme therefore has to fit around office days, before work or at lunch.
Getting to Bishops Square from across the City
Single walking times are at a brisk pace; allow a few minutes more at an easy one. Ranges give both.
Broadgate and Moorgate
Broadgate Circle is about 8 minutes on foot, east across Bishopsgate. Moorgate is 14 to 18 minutes on foot, or one stop on the Metropolitan or Circle line, about 15 minutes door to door.
Leadenhall and Monument
Leadenhall Market and the Lloyd’s building on Lime Street are about 13 minutes on foot, heading north to Bishopsgate. Monument, at the riverside end of the City, is 17 to 25 minutes on foot.
St Paul’s and the Barbican
From the western City the walk is 21 minutes or more, so take the tube: the Central line from St Paul’s or the Metropolitan line from Barbican reaches Liverpool Street in 4 minutes, about 20 minutes door to door.
FAQ
Common
questions
Is The Strength Coach in the City of London?
Just outside it. The Strength Coach trains clients at UNTIL, 280 Bishops Square, which sits in Spitalfields in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets, about a minute’s walk east of the City boundary on Bishopsgate. City clients train there with Matt Alexander; there is no separate studio inside the Square Mile.
How far is The Strength Coach from Bank?
The walk from Bank to The Strength Coach at UNTIL Bishops Square takes about 15 minutes at a brisk pace and 20 at an easy one. The Central line is no faster: one stop to Liverpool Street plus the walks to and from the platforms comes to about 18 minutes by TfL’s journey planner.
Can I train before work or at lunch from a City office?
Yes. The Strength Coach coaches Monday to Friday from 06:00, with the last sessions finishing at 16:00, so a session can come before the working day or at lunch. Sessions last 60 minutes, so with the walk each way from Bank a lunchtime session takes about an hour and a half.
How much does a personal trainer cost in the City of London?
The Strength Coach charges £780 for 6 sessions, £1,500 for 12 and £2,880 for 24, which is £120 to £130 a session, with no gym membership or venue fee on top. In September 2026, joining a City gym cost from about £33 to £257 a month before any personal training was added.
